“It’s comforting to know each resort has security and plenty of planned activities”

Mr. and Mrs. Chris Babin

Bush, Louisiana

This year we traveled to Florida for 2 months and to New England for 1 month, to date our total overnight expense is under $500.”

Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Cargile

Livingston, Texas

“An absolute must for a part time or fulltimer”

Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Look

Tawas City, Michigan

“Until we discovered private membership camping, we had seriously considered selling our RV.  On a fixed income and with many “open to the public campgrounds” charging $25 or more per night, we did not see how we could afford to continue traveling.  Paying $5 per night with our membership has been the best thing for us.”

Most Common Questions and Answers about Campground Memberships

Most Common Questions and Answers about Campground Memberships

Resort Parks International and

Passport America

WHAT IS RESORT PARKS INTERNATIONAL (RPI)?

RPI is one of the largest networks of private membership camping.  RPI  has become the sole choice network by many of the larger resort chains.  RPI provides a reciprocal service which expands the recreation and vacation opportunities derived from membership in a Home Resort.  RPI also provides a number of other services and benefits for resort members.

WHO MAY JOIN RPI?

The general public cannot join RPI. Only members of a resort which is affiliated with RPI may  join. These resorts pay substantial affiliation fees and meet stringent requirements for the RPI service.

WHEN WAS RPI FOUNDED?

RPI was founded in 1981 by the Carlsberg Corporation and is now owned by US Trails.

WHERE DOES RPI HAVE ITS HEADQUARTERS?

In Long Beach California at:  3711 Long Beach Boulevard, Suite 110, Long Beach, California 90807.

WHAT DOES IT COST TO JOIN RPI?

The initial membership fee is determined by the member’s Home Resort. Members renew their RPI membership for $50.00 per year.

DOES A MEMBERSHIP RUN ON A CALENDAR YEAR OR DOES IT START FROM THE DATE SUBMITTED ON THE APPLICATION?

A RPI membership will go for 12 months from the date you join.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO RECEIVE MY MEMBERSHIP CARD?

Your permanent membership card should reach you within 30 days from the time your application is received by RPI. Your Home Resort will issue you a RPI temporary membership card good for 60 days from the date you joined.

MAY I BEGIN USING THE RPI SERVICE IMMEDIATELY?

Certainly. You may begin using the RPI resorts as soon as you receive your temporary membership card. A temporary membership card provided by your Home Resort will give you immediate access.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BE ADMITTED TO A RPI RESORT?

An  RPI Membership Card, a Home Resort I.D. and a drivers license

WHEN DO I PAY MY ANNUAL DUES AT RPI?

Members receive a renewal notice each year prior to their anniversary date

IF I DECIDE NOT TO RENEW MY MEMBERSHIP BUT CHANGE MY MIND LATTER ON, CAN I RENEW IT AT A LATTER DATE?

Yes, however there is a $100.00 reinstatement fee plus a renewal fee of $50.00.

HOW MANY MEMBERSHIP CARDS DO I RECEIVE WITH MY MEMBERSHIP?

One.  Additional or replacement cards can be issued for a $5.00 processing fee.

IF I SELL MY RESORT MEMBERSHIP, IS THE NEW OWNER ELIGIBLE FOR RPI?

Yes, but RPI must be notified in writing of the transfer of membership. An application must also be signed by the new owner and a $20 transfer fee must be paid.

MAY I USE ALL THE RPI RESORTS?

You may use all the resorts located outside of the 125 mile radius of your Home Resort. However, your Home Resort may have special reciprocal visiting agreements with nearby resorts.

DOES THE 125 MILE RULE APPLY TO AIR OR DRIVING MILES?

Air miles.

FROM WHAT POINT IS THE 125 MILES MEASURED?

It is from your Home Resort (the resort that you purchased at).

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH RESORTS PARTICIPATE IN THE RPI PROGRAM?

First, check your Resort Directory. You may also check with your Home Resort or give RPI a call.

DO ALL RPI RESORTS HAVE RV SITES?

All the RV resorts do. However, some resorts are accepted into the RPI program on a provisional basis while under construction. These resorts have agreed to build RV sites and extensive recreational facilities but may not have everything at first.

WHAT IS THE PER NIGHT CHARGE AT A RPI RESORT?

For each night stay at a RPI affiliated resort you must pay $5 cash.

MAY I BRING GUEST TO RPI RESORTS?

Yes, but the number of persons per site reservation is limited to one family unit plus two additional persons and no more than four 4 adults.

IF I HAVE A QUESTION REGARDING RPI, WHAT SHOULD I DO FIRST?

First, consult your RPI directory. If your not able to find the answer contact RPI member services on the toll free number.

WHAT ARE THE RPI OFFICE HOURS?

8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time, Monday through Friday.

RPI DEFINITIONS

1) AFFILIATED RESORT

A resort that has been approved for affiliation by RPI and agrees to provide reciprocal privileges to RPI members.

2) HOME RESORT

The affiliated resort at which you are a member / owner.

3) HOST RESORT

The affiliated resort which will be accommodating your reservation.

4) RPI MEMBER

A RPI affiliated resort member/owner in good standing with his Home Resort and RPI (i.e. current on all appropriate fees).

5) RV RESORT

These resorts have RV sites and facilities for RV’ers.

6) RV SITES

Facilities to accommodate various types of recreational vehicles. For example: Motorhomes, campers, travel trailers, pop-ups and fifth wheels. See Resort Directory page for availability and site utilities.

MEMBERSHIPS

The RPI membership is only available to  members of a resort that is affiliated with RPI. The RPI membership dues are separate from your Home Resort dues.

125 MILE RULE

Members are not able to use resorts that are within a 125 air mile radius of their Home Resort. Your Home Resort is where you purchase your resort membership.

MEMBERSHIP IDENTIFICATION

All members are required to present a Home Resort membership card and their RPI membership card upon check-in. Members without proper identification will not be accepted at the Hosting Resort. Please be sure you have these two items prior to your visit. Additional and/or replacement RPI membership cards may be ordered through RPI Member Services Office for $5.00. In the event that your card has been lost or stolen and you are on the road, RPI can verify your RPI membership with the park you are scheduled to visit.

RESERVATIONS

There are two major factors that allow members to access the use of campsites on a drive-up basis. Number one is that all of the resorts are “Private Member Only” resorts, therefore, you are not competing with the general public for campsites. Secondly, the license agreement each developer signed with RPI is required to set aside a percentage of their campsites to be used only by visiting affiliate members. These are campsites that the developer can not sell memberships to. Between the private member only status and the campsites at each resort reserved for visiting members,  resorts are generally available on a drive-up basis. There are however just under 20% of the resorts that history has proven drive-up availability is not always that certain. These resorts have been placed on what’s known as the “Advanced Notification Status”. This status will be specifically so noted on the directory page where the map and driving directions are listed. These resorts do want to know when you are arriving and for how many nights you plan to stay.

MAKING A RESERVATION

Be sure to carefully and completely read all the reservation information provided.

1) Select a resort you would like to visit

2) Select your arrival and departure dates

3) Have your RPI Membership ID number ready

4) Call or write the resort and place your reservation or call the RPI 800#.

RESERVATION PROCEDURE

1) Your request for reservations to use the RPI network of resorts may be made by either  writing or calling the resort directly or using the RPI 1-800#.

2) Your reservations will be easy if you remember to plan your trip before calling RPI.

Here are a few points to remember:

  • Consult your RPI Directory for your desired resort location.
  • Note available times, special reservation requirements and restrictions.
  • Choose your arrival and departure dates for each resort.
  • Know the number of adults and children in your party.
  • Have your RPI identification number ready
RESERVATION POLICIES
  • Resorts requiring reservations may differ at each resort usually ranging between 30-90 days in advance of selected arrival dates. See individual directory page for requirements.

  • Pets are permitted in most resorts. Check your directory for any applicable restrictions.

  • Affiliated resorts do not allow reservations from RPI members whose Home Resort is located less that 125 miles away. Please check with the resort that you intend to visit if you are considering reservations that would be affected by this policy.

  • Extended visits, if permitted by the Host Resort are subject to space availability.

  • Requests for reservations will be accepted only from RPI members in good standing with their Home Resort and Resort Parks International.

  • Resort location maps on each resort page in the RPI directory are provided as a general guide and to highlight points of interest

ADDITIONAL RPI MEMBER BENEFITS

The parent company that owns RPI (US Trails) also owns the resort chain known as   NACO.   NACO is a forty (40) resort chain.  All members with an RPI identification card are allowed access into all of the NACO resorts just like any other RPI resort.

The same parent company (US Trails) that owns RPI and the NACO resort chain, also owns the resort chain known as Thousand Trails.  Thousand Trails is a thirty six (36) resort chain.  All members of RPI will be given annual passes to allow access to the Thousand Trails preserves.

Why Buy a Camping Membership?

Why Buy a Camping Membership?

Private Camping

Public Camping

SAVE MONEY:  Camp for just $5  a night at over 500 private resort campgrounds.  Exclusive to members and guests, with access to hundreds of resorts nationwide. Cost The national average is $15 to $25 a night (many charge up to $50 a night)
Park Rangers patrol private resorts on a continual basis (peace of mind, no riffraff) Access There is no control over who or what groups can camp in a public facility.  Crime is increasingly on the rise in many government parks.
Safer Environment. Generally campers in a private resort are people like you, they look out for one another, similar to a neighborhood watch.  You often run into the same people at other resorts. Park Security Some parks have security, but most do not.   There  have been several nationwide articles telling the dangers of public campgrounds, including a feature in Time magazine describing the violence encountered by park rangers.
Private resorts offer quality facilities (85% of the resorts are 4 or 5 stars).  Resorts that do not meet the specified standards of quality are removed from the system. Facilities Public campgrounds have inconsistent facilities.   Most public campgrounds are not held accountable for inferior facilities or service.
Each private resort offers numerous amenities, such as:  a member lodge/club house, convenience store, indoor/outdoor swimming pool and spa complex, beach and marina, boats, fishing, playground, horseshoes, basketball, miniature golf, ice skating, horse back riding, recreation rooms, member’s kitchen, restaurants, laundry facility, and much more!  There really is too much to list! Amenities Most public campgrounds just don’t have the budgets for the amenities you will find in a private membership resort.  Also, those that do have amenities, such as a pool, often charge extra for their usage.
Activities Directors will plan event weekends, barbecues, games (bingo, card tournaments, etc.), arts & crafts, boat races, and more! Planned Activities Generally there aren’t any.   There are a handful of campgrounds that do, but they generally charge additional fees.
Consistently clean facilities.  Both employees and members take pride in the resort, and work hard to make sure it meets the highest standards. Conditions Inconsistent Conditions.  Some parks are very nice, but this varies from campground to campground, and you usually don’t find out until you arrive.
Security and privacy create a wholesome family atmosphere.  There is fun for the whole family, from tiny tots to adults. Family Environment This depends on the park.  You have to research to find out.
Private resorts offer many discounts for roadside assistance, hotel accommodations,  amusement park admission, and more!

Discounts

There are some discounts available through public campgrounds, but there are fewer than with private memberships.

2) WHY ARE PRIVATE RV PARKS NICER THAN THEN PUBLIC RV PARKS?

The trend has been for several years that the nicer more developed resorts have gone to private membership. Let us explore the reasons why. The bottom line is that by becoming a private membership resort the resort developer/owner will make a considerable amount more money. To explain by example, lets compare two resorts with the same amount of amenities and campsites. The public park rents sites at $15.00 per night and the membership park sells memberships at the national average sales price of $3995.00 with annual dues of $250.00. Lets say that the public park averages an 80% occupancy for six months out of the year. Lets also say that the membership park enrolls 2000 members. Lets also say that both parks have 100 utility sites.

PUBLIC PARKMEMBERSHIP PARKRental of 100 sites x 80% occupancy x 6 months per year x $15 per/night2000 members sold at a price of $3995.00, and 2000 members paying dues of $250 per yearTOTAL INCOME FROM SALES $7,990,000.0TOTAL ANNUAL RENTAL INCOME $218,400.00TOTAL ANNUAL DUES INCOME $500,000.00

1) PRIVATE CAMPING VS. PUBLIC CAMPING

3)  ISN’T BETTER TO HAVE MY HOME RESORT IN MY HOME STATE?

No.  Remember the 125 mile rule (See Most Common Questions, 125 mile rules).  By having your Home Resort out of the state you are able to use all of the resorts in your home state.

4) HOW DO I KNOW THAT I WILL ALWAYS BE ABLE TO GET A CAMPSITE?

Each resort developer that obtains a license to participate in the network is required to set aside a percentage of their total campsite’s for visiting members. These are sites that the developer can not sell memberships to.  Over the years a complicated formula has been established so the availability opportunity at each resort is optimum for visiting members.
